Because things are not what they once were in the Arctic, Gayathri Vaidyanathan, in Sunday’s Washington Post, is able to tell the tale of John Franklin’s expedition and the recent find of the expedition’s ships, the HMS Terror and Erebus; both lost trying to find a northern sea path linking the Atlantic and Pacific oceans in 1846.
Like their Flat Earth Society buddies, letters from climate change deniers will no longer be published by the Los Angeles Times. Paul Thorton, the Times’ Letters Editor writes, “Simply put, I do my best to keep errors of fact off the letters page; when one does run, a correction is published. Saying “there’s no sign humans have caused climate change” is not stating an opinion, it’s asserting a factual inaccuracy”. This follows the decision by Popular Science to turn off its facility for online comments to stem the tide of shrill, ad hominem attacks unsupported by research, authority, or evidence. Bravo to both.
